Location: Goldbottom Creek is a north tributary to the Niukluk River. The mouth of Goldbottom Creek is across the river from Camp Creek (SO057) and about 6 miles upstream from the mouth of Ophir Creek (SO053). Mining may have taken place at several locations along Goldbottom Creek. The location used here is 1.6 miles upstream from the mouth at the confluence with Warm Creek (SO054), an east tributary. The elevation at this location is about 175 feet. This is locality 116 of Cobb (1972, MF 445; 1978, OF 78-181).
Geology: Placer mining started early and about 485 ounces of gold ($10,000) were produced in 1900 (Brooks and others, 1901). Small dredges operated from 1909 to at least 1911. A heavy-mineral concentrate from near the mouth of Warm Creek (SO054) contained gold, hematite, ilmenite, garnet, and scheelite. Gravels were 5 to 6 feet thick and the gold, recovered from the lower 2 feet of gravel and 1 foot of bedrock, was coarse, well-rounded and mostly bright (Collier and ohters, 1908). Bedrock schist, marble, and some greenstone contains numerous pyrite-bearing quartz veins and lenses. Most of the drainage is probably underlain by a lower Paleozoic metasedimentary assemblage (Till and others, 1986).
