Köppen climate type:
The Merume River is a river of Guyana, a tributary of the Kamarang River.
Merume is also the name of a nearby mountain, which is 30 miles (ca. 48 km) east of Mount Roraima. Director Creek is a tributary of Merume River. First Falls is a feature of the river which also limits travel by boat.
Kamakusa was a settlement along the river, and formerly a government center.
Original locality for Merumite.
Merumite was originally listed in American Mineralogist: 34(3-4): 339 as a new mineral name (see http://www.minsocam.org/ammin/AM34/AM34_339.pdf)
In 1967 Milton et al. showed it to consist of fine-grained intergrowths predominantly of eskolaite (Cr2O3), quartz, and occasionally with 4 new minerals (bracewellite, grimaldiite, guyanaite and mcconnellite, see https://pubs.usgs.gov/publication/pp887)
Note: Most tested specimens of merumite are virtually all eskolaite (Tony Nikischer, 2012, personal communication).
Merumite occurs as black rounded grains in alluvial gravels of the drainage basin of the Merume River, Guyana.
