Gold mineralization at the Water Tank Hill Mine is associated with brecciated and sulphudic banded iron formations within a felsic/mafic volcanic series. The gold occurs in a series of sub-vertical high grade plunging shoots within the banded iron formation fold closure. The banded iron formations contain quartz-magnetite, with 2 mm thick magnetite banding layers, and quartz rich layers containing gold associated with siderite and hematite. The ore occurs along faults, in areas of abundant, shallow dipping quartz veins. The ore is a series of quartz-pyrrhotite veins 1 to 5 cms thick.
Ramelius Resources in 2013 is looking at re-opening the mine, accessing it from its St George mine decline, which is close by.
The pit appears to be in a poor state of repair, either due to the soft kaolinite walls eroding, or the dumping of tailings from nearby active mines into the pit.
