Fe Mine (1956/?)

Mining operations in Vila Cova began around 1956, centered on a magnetite (iron ore) deposit within a stratiform metamorphic formation. The mine featured both open-pit and underground extraction. At its peak, it employed roughly one thousand workers. The maximum depth reached about 200 meters, spread across multiple extraction levels, or “floors” (up to eight). The primary company operating the mine at that time was Vicominas. The ore was transported to the Altos Fornos da Campeã, where it was smelted before being exported or processed, for instance, into silicon production. Mining activities ceased in the late 1970s, following a collapse in the global iron market.
