Heidelberg Materials: Princeton Quarry


A quarry located between the Little River & the intersection of state routes 2316 & 2371. Quarry is situated next to the Little River and can be accessed via Edwards Road (State Route 2372). The Princeton Quarry is an active quarry site currently operated by Heidelberg Materials, but has been around in some capacity as a quarry since the 1950's. It is struck into metavolcanic rocks of the Spring Hope Terrane, which is thought to be part of the Carolina Superterrane.

A site visit in January 2026 found an active quarry, roughly 350 feet deep, which can only be accessed with explicit permission. Hydrothermal fluids have created veins in the rock, which host Orange/Pink Calcite, Chalcopyrite and Quartz, The Pink Calcite was found to occur in larger, crystalline chunks while the Orange Calcite tended to be more of a massive gritty texture. The Calcite is fluorescent (Bright Orange), and was found to be lightly phosphorescent under a 365 nm UV light. Chalcopyrite was found in small amounts in and around these veins, with a bit of tarnish of blue and purple. Epidote was found in massive chunks streaking through the metavolcanic rocks, and in veins it was found in radiating sprays of euhedral crystals.

This is an active quarry site. Entrance without permission is not only illegal but extremely dangerous. Do not contact plant managers to attempt to get individual permission, as they will not only reject that request but it also creates tension with the clubs who have connections to organize trips.
