Gypsum has been worked in the vicinity of Fauld since at least Norman times.
In 1944 an explosive depot in disused workings detonated. This was one of the largest accidental blasts in history and left a crater 300m across and more than 30m deep.
The current gypsum mine (SK179281) is the largest producer of gypsum and anhydrite in the UK.
