Little Deer Park Quarry
Abandoned 19th century chalk and basalt quarry on the west side of the coast road just south of Glenarm and opposite the natural sea arch known locally as "Madman's Window" or "Spy Window".
It is the co-type locality for gmelinite, this honour being shared with Nero Mt., San Pietro, Montecchio Maggiore, Vicenza Province, Veneto, Italy (https://www.mindat.org/loc-29986.html).
The first specimens were actually found at the Italian locality but were mistaken for a variety of analcime.
When similar material was found at Little Deer Park it was passed to Sir David Brewster who, using both Irish and Italian material, proved it to be a new mineral and named it "gmelinite" in honour of the chemist Prof. Gmelin.
Both Ca and Na dominant forms are present, even in the same crystal as zones (S. Moreton, unpublished XRF and SEM-EDS analyses).
