Finch Magnesite Quarry; Finch Mine


A large magnesite mine by Browns Lake SW of Chewelah. The ore occurred as a lens of magnesite 1600' long and from 300' to 650' deep. It operated from 1917 to 1954 and was for a time the largest magnesite mine in Washington, and one of the largest in the country. Ore was produced from multiple quarries, one of which dropped its ore down to a haulage adit. Around 3,000,000 tons of ore was produced. A five mile long aerial tramway connected the mine to the magnesite plant in Chewelah.
