The Hillcrest Mine (NE SE Section 9 T46N R29W) was began by the Adams Brothers Company in 1915 as an open pit strip mine. It worked lenticular manganese-rich bodies within the complexly folded cherty oolitic banded iron formation of the Proterozoic Trommald Formation. In 1964 the pit was acquired by the Hanna Coal and Ore Company. The ore at that time was mostly hematite. Aegirine (acmite), magnetite, and siderite are also reported from the mine.
