Coal mining in the Issaquah area began in 1862 and the mine in the No. 4 seam, began development in 1900 with the construction of the water level tunnel. Water level gangway of the No. 4 seam water level workings and trends WSW into the hillside for about 1.25 miles, where it emerges at the
western portal near Tibbets Creek.
