Ivy Scar* is, along with the likes of Ellerkin Scar and Great Wegber, one of a number of impressive limestone scars that look down on Wensleydale from the north. Ivy Scar is situated between the small villages of Woodhall and Carperby and above the bridleway called Oxclose Road. It is also a prominent feature in views from the opposite side of the valley between Addlebrough and Pen Hill.

There is no path to or along the scar and technically it is not situated on access land. It is however easy to reach from a simple climb up from Oxclose Road just after it has crossed Eller Beck above Disher Force. An alternative route is to take the track from Peatmoor Lane leading up to the masts to the east of the scar. Just beyond the masts a gate in the wall provides access to Ivy Scar.

Wet Grooves mine site and its spoil heaps are situated below Ivy Scar.

*Scars are exposed cliffs of limestone. They were created during the last ice age, when huge sheets of ice scraped away the soil-covered spurs in many valleys in the Yorkshire Dales. The exposed surface is affected by freeze-thaw action on the well-jointed limestone. Water enters the cracks and if it freezes, expands. As the water expands, so do the cracks. Repeated freezing and thawing eventually breaks off rock and at the bottom of the scar cliff a talus or scree slope (a collection of broken rock fragments) is formed.
