Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Blue Bird Mine, Van Zandt Mine
The Bluebird was one of the great early silver mines of Butte. Its production combined with the other silver mines of Butte and Philipsburg led Montana briefly to be one of the leading silver producing regions of the world. The mine was managed by Ferdinand Van Zandt, who led the mine up until his death in 1892. In 1886, a 90 stamp mill was built at the mine which was claimed by the Engineering and Mining Journal to be "one of the most perfect mills in the west." By the time of the silver crash of 1893, the mine had largely mined out its reserves, and little activity has taken place since. Overall the mine produced just under 2 million ounces of silver.
