Big Elephant - This, the N. W. H. Jr. Lode, has been sold to Layol L. Smith for $ 8,500. The deed also includes the N. W. H. Jr. mill-site. The real purchaser is supposed to be the Japan Mines Company, whose new cross-cut will intersect the Big Elephant vein at a depth of several hundred feet. The Marshall Creek Mining Company was the seller, Eastern people who did no more work on the property than was sufficient to secure a patent. Where exposed the vein is 25 ft. wide and always been considered a good milling proposition.
Note - this may be the "Lower Japan Tunnel" on the USGS Telluride quad map, located WNW from Japan Mine.
