A zinc mine located near Markleton. Ore is in fractured Everton Dolomite & St Joseph Limestone. Started 1866 and closed 1900. Operated again during WWI.
Alteration: Smithsonite Coatings Upon Exposed Sphalerite.
Deposit: St. Joe mbl 20' above zinc bearing horizon. When visited by state geologist branner in jan., 1892, he found several examples of large sphalerite crystals with coatings of smithsonite. Also, seams of tallow clay to 2 feet thick. Only galena found was As large crystals embedded in compact gray chert. ; info.src : 1 pub lit
Development: Work first began here in february, 1891. When visited by professor purdue in july, 1900, mine was not in operation, shaft was filled with water.
Geology: The smaller ravine in which the mine is situated is in a slight fault with the down throw of about 25' on the SE side. The saccharoidal sandstone is on the south side at the top of the shaft, but the adjacent tunnel is in brecciated chert of ordovician age. The chert is broken into large and small fragments with fragments of clean, white sandstone embedded in the chert.
