Lake Bullen Merri occupies a large maar crater of Quaternary age. Its clover leaf shape suggests that it was formed by three craters coalescing. The lake measures 3.2 km by 2.8 km, and the brackish lake water is about 60 m deep. Lake Bullen Merri and the nearby Lake Gnotuk together form a site of international significance listed in Victoria.

In the early 1980s a small and restricted deposit of zircon crystals was discovered on the eastern shore line in heavy mineral sands along with spinel, olivine, garnet, ilmenite, biotite, pyroxene, amphibole, and anorthoclase.

Description: Complete or near complete zircon crystals have been found ranging in size from 3mm to 12mm in diameter. Colours range from pale orange brown through to straw yellow, pale greenish yellow, white, colourless and dark brown. These crystals are not of gem quality as most crystals show a high degree of crazing and fracturing but are usually quite lustrous.
