Harney Rim, historically known to collectors as Secret Ridge, is a thunderegg locality south of Buchanan in Harney Co., OR. Regional mapping places the locality within Miocene basaltic terrain, but nearby Buchanan workings reportedly expose thunderegg-bearing rhyolite beds. The Harney Rim bed is probably a small or unmapped rhyolitic or related silicic unit, although its precise host remains unspecified.
Harney Rim thundereggs typically contain white→pale blue-gray common opal & chalcedony, prominent horizontal bands, darker gray→brown agate, locally clear chalcedony, quartz-lined cavities & sparse dendritic inclusions. Horizontal bands record gravity-controlled deposition in cavities that remained partly open, while margin-parallel bands formed against the cavity walls.
MRDS 10158994 documents a semiprecious-gem operation named Harney Rim, operated by Desert Dog Mines, at the same location. Collector sources equate Harney Rim with the Secret Ridge thunderegg bed, but the MRDS record itself does not specify thundereggs.
