Mined for copper and iron sulphides. The iron sulphides were used for hundreds of years to produce a very fine synthetic hematite powder ("bengara") for red laquerware and other colouring uses. Ore extraction stopped in the 1960s, but the mine is currently open as an underground tourist attraction and museum.
