Big Bygoo Mine
An abandoned tin mine. Also known as the Big Bygoo Mine. Historically the mine was sometimes worked with the nearby Cootes Lone Hand mine.
Early reports note an Eastern, and Western workings (although close together), and the Big Blow. All were generally low grade tin. A 1915 inspection investigated the Big Blow as a white to pink tourmaline biotite granite outcrop, and poor in cassiterite. Two shafts are noted on good ore, and a trench was rich in cassiterite at shallow levels. Other patches were found in chlorite, and quartz-tourmaline greisen. The geologist stated it was a large low grade deposit. Modern exploration states the cassiterite may be associated with minor wolframite.
The Big Bygoo Company was formed early 1913, and for a year the mine manager produced prosaic reports every fortnight about the lack of ore he was finding. Then the company was voluntarily wound up January 1914. One note of mining was found in 1916 by a 'working party'.
The Big Bygoo and Lone Hand Tin Mining Company NL was registered July 1919 by a small band of Sydney investors. A 20 head battery is erected. In 1922, the Water Conservation and Irrigation Commission of NSW goes to court to liquidate the company due to debts owed to them.
