Quarry opened in limestones of Saltrio Fm. (Early Jurassic) and Dolomia Principale Fm. (Late Triassic) on the top of Monte Pravello, near the boundary between Italy and Switzerland.

The quarry is famous for the presence of various fossiliferous levels. In particular, the fossil remains of a new dinosaur were descoverd here in 1996. This at least 8-m-long dinosaur, studied and reconstructed by the palaeontologist Cristiano Dal Sasso of the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano and by him provisionally named "Saltriosaurus", is the largest carnivorous dinosaur discovered in Italy.
