U S GEOLOGICAL SURVEY BULLETIN 1012 E 1954
Commodities (Trace) - Fluorine-Fluorite
Development Status: Unknown
The Nancy Hanks Mine Complex, shown on Mines and Minerals of the Western Kentucky Fluorspar District (Anderson & Sparks, 2012), falls within the Western Kentucky Fluorspar District, itself a sub-district of the broader Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar District. This district is a classic Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) metallogenic terrane, where fault-controlled hydrothermal circulation in Mississippian carbonate host rocks has deposited large quantities of fluorite with associated sphalerite, galena, barite, and calcite.
Mapping and analysis (Anderson & Sparks, 2012) indicate that the Nancy Hanks Mine Complex is spatially tied to the Tabb Fault System, a major ore-controlling structure in Crittenden and Caldwell Counties, which accounts for ~30% of all fluorspar ore produced in western Kentucky (Trace & Amos, 1984). Ore shoots along this system occur as steeply dipping veins and replacement mantos localized by fault zones and fractured carbonate beds. The mineral paragenesis in these deposits consistently features dominant fluorite and sphalerite as a primary sulfide (Trace & Amos, 1984; Ulrich & Smith, 1905).
