A former placer Au occurrence/mine located in secs. 2, 3, 10 & 11, T4N, R9E, MDM, 1.7 km (1.1 miles) W of Camanche, along Camanche Creek. Operated May, 1936 to February, 1940. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters. This locality is now inundated beneath the Camanche Reservoir.
NOTE: USGS MRDS database file #10186981 presents a MAS-MILS file # of 0060090044 for this mine. It also presents geographic coordinates of 120.69491W, 38.21381N, which are discrepant from the coordinates provided in the other 2 MRDS files. The T&R value presented is sec. 7, T4N, R12E, MDM, and the commodity is also Au. The occurrences documented in Murdoch & Webb (Cu species) are also anomalous data.
Mineralization is a placer Au deposit with fine flake gold. The average depth of auriferous sand and gravel is 20 feet. It is overlain in places by a thin loam up to 6 feet thick. Bedrock is soft clay.Local rocks include Paleozoic metavolcanic rocks, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada Foothills).
Dredging operations on the G.B. Podesta Ranch, formerly the Hills Ranch, commenced in the spring of 1936. 15 men were employed when the property was visited in January, 1936. The company had hoped to dredge 1½ million cubic yards a year, or about 3,500 cubic yards a day.
