Mina de las Niñas


The Las Niñas mine is located on the left slope of the ravine of that name, about 800 meters SW of Rodalquilar, in the municipality of Níjar.

This mine was worked in the 1880s to obtain silver-bearing galena and was the first in which gold was discovered in Rodalquilar, in 1883.

Given the lack of technology and processing plants in the place, the material was shipped to an inlet on a nearby beach bound for Mazarrón, where it would be worked mainly in the Santa Elisa smelter, among others, to obtain gold-lead ingots. These ingots would later be sent to Antwerp (Belgium) to separate the two metals.

By 1916, it is estimated that more than 15,000 tons of quartz were already extracted, with an average grade of 10 grams of gold per ton, the maximum grade being 600 grams per ton.
