The Natchez Trace started as a historic game trail through the wilderness. It was a footpath 440 miles long used by deer, bear, buffalo and indigenous tribes for centuries prior to the migration from Europe. It reached from Nashville, Tennessee, through the corner of Alabama, and through Mississippi to Natchez on the Mississippi River near the gulf.

By 1809, the trail was widened and could be traveled by wagons. The first small iron forge was located next to the Trace operated by John McClish, a Chickasaw Indian that owned 640 acres of land with lots of limonite ore.

Below is a quote from a paper by Edgar D. Byler, 1989, The Development of the Iron Industry in the Upper Buffalo River Valley

“It is not known what type of forge was in operation at this site. Nor is it known what types of iron or iron products were produced. It is probable that McClish used the forge to make cast products such as kettles and pots, and may have also produced rod or bloomery iron for sale in Natchez and Columbia. The production could not have been great since no reference is made to any mining operations in the area. The ore used by McClish was readily available in large quantities on the top, or near the top, of the ground.”

Mining at this location continued from about 1816 until the beginning of the Great Depression in 1929. The property changed hands many times and it eventually expanded to a large open pit named the Napier Iron Mine including the Napier Iron Works.
