A stone quarry in limestone.

Mulligan's quarry is a small, hillside cut in a bluff adjacent to the western side of the South Branch of the Raritan River. It is adjacent to the well known and picturesque mill in the west end of Clinton, NJ. This location is near the southern edge of an area underlain by Paloezoic carbonates and shales known as the “Jutland Klippe”, part of the Taconic allocthon complex. The site is just north of the northern edge of the Newark Basin. The rocks have suffered multiple periods of deformation.

Uranium was noticed in fractured dolomite at Mulligan's quarry in the early 1950's, during the uranium rush, and was investigated by the Atomic Energy Commission (McKeown et al, 1954). Uranium was found in fractures and in 2 shaley, carbonaceous beds in the dolomite. Later aerogamma surveys found the quarry to be within a larger area of above background gamma radiation. In 1986 a number of nearby houses were found to be afflicted with high levels of radon. The veinlet minerals include secondary dolomite, quartz, chalcedony, albite, apatite-F and apatite-OH. It is the apatite species that carry the uranium.

A similar occurrence is found in the ravine beneath the spillway of the Spruce Run Reservoir a short distance north.
