The Onieda Mining Company began operations in 1854 by making exploration trenches on the property.. One trench was 25 feet long and 15 feet deep and produced about 80 pounds of copper. It was discovered that the mine worked the same veins as the West Minesota Mine nearby. In 1858, the mine became part of the Victoria Mining Company.
