A former Fe occurrence/mine located on the SE slope of the hill NW of Wharton (NOTE: literature states Rockaway Township; however, that twp. is East and NE of Wharton, possibly a mistake for Roxbury Twp.), on private land. Started before 1868 and closed 1869. Owned by Garstay Associates, Roseland, NJ. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.

JOHNSON HILL MINE [Not located]

The Johnson Hill mine, said to be on the southeast slope of the hill west of Wharton (Bayley, 1910, p. 368), was not located by the writer. Some of the shallow prospect pits on the southwest extension of the Huff deposits, however, may be on the Johnson Hill property.

According to Bayley (1910, p. 368), "there were reported to be some remarkable faults crossing the vein, but they have not been described because of lack of definite information concerning their character." It is possible that these faults are related to the Rockaway River fault (pl. 1) which is inferred to cross the line of projection of the Huff deposits near the tracks of the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railroad.


Mineralization is a magnetite deposit hosted in Neoproterozoic gneiss. The ore body is 1.83 meters (6 feet) wide. Faults cross the ore body. Local rocks include microperthite alaskite/Biotite-quartz-oligoclase gneiss.

Workings include surface and underground openings with an overall length of 274.32 meters. Many small and several large pits and trenches were excavated over a distance of 900 feet. Several shafts were filled with garbage.
