Felix Fluorite Mine


A former fluorspar mine located in the S½ sec. 23, T1N, R10W, SBM, ½ mile E of the N end of Azusa Avenue, 2.1 km (7,000 feet) NNE of the city of Azusa (Dalton), Los Angeles County, California.

The deposits here have been known as a source of fine fluorite specimens since 1892, and are located on a steep, brushy hillside of decomposed granite hosting numerous subparallel fluorite-bearing veins. The larger crystals generally show octahedral and cube face development, frequently occurring as individuals and small groups on a druzy quartz matrix, with bladed white barite associations common. Most of the fluorites recovered are green in color, although some blue and purple crystals have been found. Inclusions of galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite are noted to occur in the fluorite crystals. Secondary minerals such as cerussite and malachite have been found in the deepest parts of the diggings.
