Mina de la Amistad (Mina Margarita), Villasbuenas, Salamanca
Mine of citrine quartz for use in jewelry since the early 19th century, and of colorless quartz for electronics during the 1950s and 1960s. A flooded open pit remains. The crystals occurred in cavities within quartz veins emplaced in zones of decomposed granite, enclosed within another granite that is very hard and unaltered. They were also found lining cavities filled with clay. The crystals, up to twelve centimeters long and five centimeters thick, formed groups—locally known as garapiñas—up to thirty centimeters across. The crystals generally have irregular faces, due to corrosion or to the deposition of a final generation of colorless or milky quartz, more or less opaque.
