On 1 January 2016 the former municipalities of Granaglione and Porretta Terme were merged into the new municipality of Alto Reno Terme.

The presence of quartz crystals in rock clefts of the Arenarie di Suviana (Porretta Sandstone) formation along the slopes of Monte Granaglione, to the north of Granaglione village, is known for a long time (e.g. Gambari, 1868; Bombicci, 1874; Jervis, 1874). Quartz crystals typically developed skeletal growth forms and show inclusions of light yellow-grey clay. Crystals frequently contain also water and gaseous hydrocarbon inclusions. These crystals have smooth and lustrous, in part curved faces and very often they form aggregates of two or more crystals.
