Smelter Knolls is composed of an intrusive Tertiary topaz rhyolite similar to famous Topaz Mountain rhyolite located to the northeast of Smelter Knolls. The rhyolite contains lithophysae (gas cavities peculiar to this type of volcanic emplacement) that contain mostly small quartz crystals, but may also contain small crystals of hematite, pseudobrookite, and sherry colored topaz. Most crystals are less than 3mm, but of suitable quality for micromounts.
