Ref.: Dana 6:1085.
The oldest mine in the Illinois - Kentucky fluorspar district, it was opened in 1835 by a consortium of men including President Andrew Jackson. They sought silver from the galena. In the 1940's the mine was briefly reopened as a source of zinc in the form of sphalerite. The mine is privately owned, and it is possible to get permission to collect from the dumps. In 2005 & 2006, trenches were dug on the vein and through old mine workings. Massive fluorite, galena crystals, smoky quartz, and vugs of smithsonite (several colors) have been found. Contact the Ben E. Clement Mineral Museum for more information.
