Who Performs Kagura?
Understanding Kagura through the Roles of Its Performers
Introduction
In the previous article,
we explored how kagura is not primarily a performing art for people,
but a ritual act offered to the kami.

Now let us move on to another essential question:
Who has performed kagura?
Kagura includes forms performed at the imperial court,
forms handed down in local communities,
and dances performed by priests and shrine maidens at shrines.
Although these forms may seem diverse,
they become much easier to understand
when we look at who each performer represents before the kami.
Who Are Kagura Performers?
Kagura performers do not dance
to express themselves as individuals.
They stand before the kami
as representatives of someone or something beyond themselves.
From this perspective,
kagura performers can be understood in four main categories.
Types of Kagura Performers
Court kagura (mikagura) is performed
by those who stand before the kami
as representatives of the Emperor and the state.
It is performed in sacred spaces within the Imperial Palace
to pray for the peace of the nation
and the continuity of the Imperial House.
Its form has been carefully preserved
since the Heian period.
Folk kagura (satokagura) is performed
by those who stand before the kami
as representatives of a village or local land.
Most kagura seen at local shrines and festivals
belongs to this category.
The dancers represent their community
and pray for harvest, safety, and well-being.
Priests’ dances (kannushi-mai) are performed
by those who stand before the kami
as ritual officiants.
These dances are performed
as part of shrine rituals,
together with prayers and ceremonial actions.
The movements are not displays of skill or emotion,
but ritual gestures essential to the ceremony.
Shrine maidens’ dances (miko-mai) are performed
by those who stand before the kami
with purity and devotion.
Miko-mai is danced to honor the kami,
purify the space,
and prepare the ritual setting.
Some ancient and medieval texts and traditions
describe shrine maidens
as figures who received divine messages through ritual movement.
However, such roles are not part
of modern shrine ritual systems.
Today, miko-mai is understood
as a form of ritual service.
The Role of Those Who Attend
In kagura,
the way people participate
naturally follows from
who the performers represent before the kami.
They are not evaluators,
but witnesses and participants
who share the space of prayer.
結び|Conclusion
Court kagura, folk kagura, priests’ dances, and shrine maidens’ dances.
Though their forms differ,
their essence is the same.
To stand before the kami
and offer prayer as a representative.
Kagura is a living Shinto practice
that gives form to prayer
through the body and sacred space.
When songs and dances over a thousand years old
are still alive today,
we may discover more
by standing with them,
not just watching them.
