Introduction
In previous articles,
we have explored kagura from the perspective of
who performs it and whom they represent before the kami.
From this perspective,
the diversity of kagura forms
reveals clear roles and meanings,
rather than appearing random or confusing.
Here, we will look at Hirado Kagura
as a concrete example of local kagura,
examining its origins, structure,
and the role of those who attend.
Origins and Transmission of Hirado Kagura
Hirado Kagura is said to have taken its present form
during the Genroku era of the Edo period
under the patronage of the Matsuura clan,
the lords of the Hirado domain.
According to tradition,
a retainer named Tachibana Sanki
organized Hirado Kagura
by building on older local traditions
and incorporating elements observed in kagura from other regions.
With strong support from the Matsuura family,
Hirado Kagura has been preserved
and passed down within local shrines and communities
to the present day.
Structure of Hirado Kagura
Hirado Kagura consists of
a total of twenty-four dances.
Depending on the number and selection of dances performed,
it is classified into four categories:
Small Kagura, Medium Kagura, Great Kagura,
and Grand Kagura.
Among these,
the complete performance of all twenty-four dances—Grand Kagura—
is offered only once a year
during the annual grand festival of Kameoka Shrine in October.
How to Attend Hirado Kagura
Before Watching Kagura
Traditionally, kagura is an offering
performed to delight the kami
together with the shrine’s parishioners.
While parishioners may offer sake or first fruits,
general visitors are encouraged
to bow twice, clap twice, and bow once
before the shrine,
offer a coin,
and then watch the kagura.
During the Kagura
In Hirado Kagura,
the dances are performed by Shinto priests
who use ritual tools
and rely on both physical training and mental discipline.
The power and skill of the performances
may naturally draw applause or vocal reactions.
However, as some dances involve real swords
and can be dangerous,
it is considered appropriate
to watch quietly during the performance
and to offer applause after each dance has concluded.
Study Shinto的整理
A Study Shinto Perspective
Hirado Kagura is a representative example
of folk kagura,
performed on behalf of the local land and community.
At the same time,
because Shinto priests serve as dancers,
it combines ritual seriousness
with an open, community-based festival atmosphere.
Here we can clearly see
the essence of local kagura:
a shared space of prayer
supported by both performers and attendees.
結び|Conclusion
Hirado Kagura carries the history of its land
and the memory of its community,
and continues to be offered before the kami today.
When we approach kagura
not merely as something to watch,
but as a space of prayer we share,
local kagura reveals itself
as a living cultural practice.
