Interest Stacks

Anime with a peculiar art style and theme, usually from the late 90s to mid 2000s. The genre is typically horror but can also be a slice of life comedy or romance. Plot normally revolves around the paranormal and monsters and is overall edgy / melancholic in tone. Usually contains heavy themes such as life, death, and the philosophy of good & evil. Lower quality writing but great animation design and aesthetic. Can technically be considered "Gothic Vampita" but I have included some examples that aren't that (Ouran Host Club, Serial Experiments Lain, etc).

Some notable examples: Gosick, Black Butler, Ouran Host Club, Rosario Vampire, Shiki, & Death Note - many of the productions by J.C. Staff from 2000-2011 fit the bill.

I think if this were an album, it would be Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge by My Chemical Romance.
