Arnold Mühren celebrating Ipswich's UEFA Cup win

In their 1980–81 season, the English football club Ipswich Town F.C. finished as runners-up in the championship of the Football League First Division, were semi-finalists in the FA Cup, and won the UEFA Cup. Ipswich played 66 competitive games during the season, winning 37, drawing 13 and losing 16. The season began with an unbeaten run in the club's opening 15 league matches. By the middle of March, they were strong title contenders with only two defeats in thirty-two, but a 2–1 defeat at Manchester United triggered a slump which handed the initiative to eventual league champions Aston Villa. This result was the second-best finish Ipswich had achieved in their history, bettered only by their 1961–62 championship-winning season. The club reached the semi-final of the FA Cup, losing in extra time to Manchester City. They won the final of the 1981 UEFA Cup, where a 5–4 aggregate victory over the Dutch team AZ Alkmaar clinched the club's first and only European trophy (celebration pictured). (Full article...)

1896 – Philippine Revolution: In the Battle of San Juan del Monte, the first real battle of the war, a Katipunan force temporarily captured a powder magazine before being beaten back by a Spanish garrison.
1942 – British and Australian prisoners of war in Singapore revolted against their Japanese captors, who required them to pledge not to escape.
1967 – Thurgood Marshall was confirmed as the first African-American Supreme Court justice.

The 2020–2021 US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan concluded the United States' twenty-year military involvement in the country. The withdrawal followed a 2020 agreement between the first Trump administration and the Taliban under which US and allied forces were to leave Afghanistan. Joe Biden continued the withdrawal after becoming president in 2021. As foreign forces departed, the Taliban launched a major offensive against the US-trained Afghan military, capturing Kabul on 15 August. This photograph, taken by US Army photographer Alexander Burnett on 30 August, shows Major General Chris Donahue, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, just before boarding a C-17 cargo plane at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. Donahue was the final US soldier to leave Afghanistan, completing the US troop withdrawal.
