Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Dylan Shelby and I am a trans woman from Aurora, Colorado. I have always had a passion for politics and law and recent frustrations with our democratic leadership has inspired me to run for office. I want to change the Democratic Party. My background is in sales and non-profit. I work closely with families and volunteers that are supporting strengthening girls in our community.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

For too long, career politicians have giving a voice to PACs, not people. Now’s the time to take our voice back with a campaign that is unbought and unafraid.
Someone with no political experience and nothing more than a deep interest in politics and law running for Congress is pretty crazy right? Well, it sure beats electing the same old leaders that will stand by and let fascism take over.
The oldest representative in Congress was born just 10 days after the World Premiere of Snow White… the original one. Let’s admit it, most voters aren’t 1000 years old, nor do they have $1 million+ in assets; isn’t it time “we the people” truly means We the People?

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Transportation, LGBTQ+ rights, Healthcare, Veterans Affairs, Gun Violence

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I look up to Taylor Swift. She is a model for civility and empathy.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Strong leadership and the ability to say no and push back on dangerous agendas

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Empathy, listening skills, and problem solving skills

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

To listen to constituents, draft legislation that is meaningful and vote in accordance with my district and what I know to be right

What legacy would you like to leave?

I want to leave a legacy knowing I made a difference in people’s lives. However I do that.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

I remember when I was 5, the re-election of George W Bush, our kindergarten glass was taught about voting

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I worked at Wendy’s for about a month and then quit because I couldn’t cut working until 2am every night and smelling like grease all the time.

What is your favorite book? Why?

Looking for Alaska. It is a great book about coming of age and coping with death

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

Naked in Manhattan by Chappell Roan

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

My gender identity as well as my struggles with autism

What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?

The ability to create laws and check the powers of the president

Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?

It can be beneficial for sure but I don’t think someone without experience can be any less successful. As a matter of fact, someone who has no previous experience can walk in with fresh eyes and fresh ideas

What do you perceive to be the United States' greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?

Our greatest challenge as a nation is preserving democracy and the rule of law

Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?

Yes. It gives the president 2 separate congresses to work with

What are your thoughts on term limits?

I would support congressional term limits but I also feel that age limits are important

Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?

AOC and Bernie Sanders

Do you believe that compromise is necessary or desirable for policymaking?

There are no winners in congressional compromise. Everyone loses.

The Constitution says that all bills for raising revenue must originate in the House. What role would this power play in your priorities if elected?

I could help secure funding for a lot of the change I want to make.

How should the U.S. House use its investigative powers?

The house should use its powers of investigation to find instances of governmental overreach and fraud

What committees interest you?

Agriculture, Foreign Affairs, Judiciary, Veteran’ Affairs, Space Science and Technology

What are your views on financial transparency and government accountability?

It is important that voters understand where their tax dollars are going
