I am Wing Tak Lui, a gemologist and mineral researcher with nearly two decades of professional experience in the mineral and gemstone industry. Since 2005, I have conducted extensive fieldwork and research in Thailand, Myanmar, Madagascar, and Sri Lanka, with a particular focus on the synthesis, glass-filling, and heat treatment of ruby and sapphire, as well as the geological occurrence and treatment-related features of jadeite.

I possess in-depth knowledge of Myanmar’s jade mining regions, and my research integrates traditional gemological expertise with modern geological and analytical approaches, contributing to the study of both rough and fashioned jadeite materials.

I have traveled extensively across multiple continents to collect mineral and gemstone specimens for laboratory-based research. My analytical experience includes FTIR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV–Vis spectroscopy, LIBS, EDXRF, and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

I am frequently invited to provide on-site mineral and gemstone identification services at major mineral and gem exhibitions across Europe, mainland China, Taiwan, and Japan, where I conduct professional examinations and issue formal identification certificates, bridging academic research with real-world applications.

I hold a Doctor degree and am a Fellow of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (FGA), a Fellow of the Diamond Grading Association (DGA), and an HRD-certified Diamond Grader (Antwerp). I received advanced training from GIA researchers, including formal certification in colored gemstone origin determination methodologies, and have also completed professional training at the Gübelin Academy (Switzerland).

In recent years, my research has increasingly focused on the application of artificial intelligence in gemology and mineral identification, particularly in data integration, spectral interpretation, and pattern recognition. In recognition of this work, I was awarded an Outstanding Paper Award at the 2023 International Academic Conference and Paper Competition organized by NGTC (National Gemstone and Jewelry Management Center).

In addition to analytical research and identification, I am deeply engaged in mineral and gemstone photography, with a strong emphasis on accurately documenting crystal morphology, internal features, and growth relationships. I firmly believe that science and art are complementary, and that high-quality scientific imagery plays a crucial role in advancing mineralogical research, education, and public understanding.
