Named for Eugene Woldemar Hilgard (5 January 1833, Zweibrücken, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany – 8 January 1916, Berkeley, California, United States), German-American geologist, one of the first to describe the Louisiana salt dome deposits. He is also considered the father of modern soil science in the United States.
