Named by Brøgger (1890), derived from the Greek for nut and cerium, in allusion to its nutbrown color and content of cerium.
Possibly a thorian Melanocerite-(Ce).
First described by Brögger (1890) from the Arøy skerries, Langesundsfjord, Vestfold, Norway.
