Name:
Named in 1876 by Charles Upham Shepard in honor of William Hypolitus Louis Keating [August 11, 1799, Wilmington, Delaware, USA – May 17, 1840, London, England, UK]. Keating was a professor of geology and mineralogy at the University of Pennsylvania, who studied the Franklin Mining District in the 1820s and had named silieous oxide or silicate of zinc (willemite), jeffersonite and dysluite. Keating (1822) published Narrative of an Expedition to the Source of St. Peter's River, Lake Winnepeek, Lake of the Woods, &c. &c., Performed in the Year 1823, by Order of the Hon. J. C. Calhoun, Secretary of War, Under the Command of Stephen H. Long, Major, U.S.T.E. wherein he was the first to discuss the pro-glacial lake now known as Lake Agassiz. (Note: Family genealogists sometimes list Hipolyte or Hypelicon as an alternate for Hypolitus.)
