Name:
Named after the locality where it was discovered: Cape Emeri, Island of Naxos, Greece
A rock - a mixture of granular Corundum (predominant component) and other minerals; usually contains spinel group minerals like hercynite and/or iron oxides, such as magnetite and hematite, and rutile.

Emery is used as a natural abrasive, but is sometimes produced artificially.

Commonly found as a metabauxite originated from karst bauxite associated with to marble ( metamorphosed limestone). Diasporite may for at lower metamorphic grades. These rocks are commonly known as corundites.

It may also form from magmatic segregation (e.g. McNevin 1975), although geological studies (such as those on the classic Cortlandt Complex near Peekskill, New York) show that many deposits once thought to be purely magmatic are actually the result of magma assimilation and contact metamorphism. In these cases, the magma melted and absorbed aluminum-rich sedimentary, rocks (like shale or schist), leading to the crystallization of corundum (Butler, 1936 ).
