Name:
After the locality at Ampangabé, Madagascar.
Synonym:
A synonym of Samarskite-(Y)
First described as a new mineral, an U-REE niobotantalate related to samarskite-(Y) by the French mineralogist Alfred Lacroix in 1912.
Now discredited.

Van Wambeke (1960) observed that ampangabeite shows three visually distinct zones: a) an internal non-altered zone, with black colour and conchoidal fracture b) a intermediate altered zone of brownish to red brownish colour and c) an external heavily altered zone. The colour varies from yellowish-brown to honey yellow.

Van Wambeke (1960) showed that ampangabeite should be classified as an altered samarskite.
