Name:
Leucaugite is a variety of pyroxene, specifically diopside, which is white (Greek 'leuco') to light gray. The name originated with Thomas Sterry Hunt and appeared in print in Dana's System of Mineralogy, fifth edition, where Hunt is credited with giving the name to a white pyroxene from Bathurst township, Lanark County, Canada. The name became more widely known when Albert R. Leeds analyzed a similar mineral from Amity, New York (Contributions to Mineralogy, Leucaugite from Amity, New York, American Journal of Science, Third Series, volume 6, 1873, P. 24.)
First Recorded Locality:
A variety of diopside noted for white to pale tan coloration and with a distinct platy character and somewhat rhombic appearance.
