Name:
The name (after the country of Belgium) was proposed in 1916 by the Italian scientist Ruggero Panebianco to replace willemite, for he objected to naming minerals named after kings.
However, Altenberg (the type locality of Willemite) was at the time a part of the 'Neutral Territory of Moresnet" and not of Belgium; it only became a part of Belgium after WWI, by the Treaty of Versailles.
