Name:
Named in 1975 by Clifford Frondel and Jun Ito in honor of John Leach Baum [March 15, 1916 New York, New York, USA - October 16, 2011 Hamburg, New Jersey, USA], graduate of Harvard University and student under Dr. Charles Palache. He was the former Head Geologist, Franklin Mine, Curator Emeritus of the Franklin Mineral Museum, author and contributor to the mineralogy and geology of the Franklin deposit.
Baumite is a medium brown to nearly black manganoan lizardite which, as with many serpentines. May be intergrown with minor amounts of chlorite. Clark [1993, "Hey's Mineral Index"] reports this as a species, but Nickel and Nichols [1991, "Mineral Reference Manual"] regarded it as 'a mixture of several serpentines and chlorites', quoting Frondel and Ito (1975).

For accuracy, "baumite" is not a variety of lizardite, but rather a mixture of lizardite, zincian caryopilite/zincian greenalite, and chlorite group phases (Guggenheim and Bailey, 1990).
