About Batchelorite
A Mixture Of:
‘Batchelorite’ was described by Petterd (1910) as a green, massive, very fine grained slatey or serpentine-like mineral, locally abundant in the Mt Lyell mines. Batchelorite-rich rocks were reportedly very rich in gold, but it was also used as an ornamental stone. Petterd (1910) reported two analyses, one consistent with pyrophyllite and one with paragonite. Re-analysis of visually identical material from the same locality by Bothwell and Moss (1957) showed it to be a slightly Cr-bearing muscovite (i.e. ‘fuchsite’) giving the formula (Na,K,Ca,Ba)1.00(Al,Ti,Fe,Cr,Mg)2.03(Si,Al)4O10.04(OH,F)1.98.
