About Shungite (2)
A term commonly used for a Precambrian algal-derived oil shale found in the Shun'ga area, Russia, with >5% carbon. The term shungite (Shungite(1)) is also used at this location for a pyrobitumen-like substance formed by remobilisation of bitumen from the oil shale into veins and open spaces, and later hardening by loss of volatiles.
Shungite of both types gets a good description on Wikipedia, and a better one in Melezhik, et al., (2004).
Melezhik, et al., (2004) subdivide the ore material by carbon content: shungite-1 (our Shungite (1)) having a carbon content in the range 98-100 weight per cent and shungite-2, -3, -4 and -5 (all our Shungite (2)) having carbon contents in the ranges 35-80 per cent, 20-35 per cent, 10-20 per cent and less than 10 per cent, respectively.
In a different classification, shungite (2) can be subdivided on the basis of its lustre into bright, semi-bright, semi-dull and dull, with decreasing carbon content (Mastarlez, et al., 2000).
