Name:
Named in 1890 by William E. Hidden and Samuel L. Penfield in 1890 in honor of Augustus Choate Hamlin [1839 Columbia Falls, Maine - 1905 Bangor, Maine], American physician, author, and collector of minerals and gems. The original hamlinite description did not contain a true chemical analysis. Prior (1900b) surveyed hamlinite, florencite, plumbogummite, beudantite, and svanberg, and later suggested their classification into a Hamlinite-Beudantite-Jarosite group and subsequently a Hamlinite-Florencite group. Prior (1905b) gave a relatively modern formula of hamlinite as the strontium-dominant member of the "groups." Waldemar Schaller (1915) renamed goyazite.
