Name introduced by Ekeberg (1806) for a dark greenish spinel-like mineral found in Eric Matts mine in the Falun mining district, Sweden.
The name is derived from the Greek autómolos (αυτόμολος), meaning “deserter” or “renegade,” alluding to the fact that the mineral—through its unexpected zinc content— "deserts" its association with noble stones and aligns more closely with zinc ores.
