Name:
Name from the greek άκάνθις (goldfinch) and κονίά (powder) reflecting the color of the powdered mineral. Used by d`Andrada (1800) for an olive-green mineral from Arendal Iron Mines, Norway. Later showed by Haüy (1801) to be synonymous with epidote.
